Greek nationality - Greek passport

Greece has been a member of the EU since 1981. Obtaining the Greek nationality and Greek passport grants to the holder the opportunity to travel and work freely inside all the members of the European Union.

For many years now, people of Greek descent, living abroad, have been seeking to obtain the dual citizenship in order to enjoy the benefits of being a European Citizen.

According to Greek Law, if any of your ancestors was a Greek citizen, you are eligible to become a Greek citizen too. The same applies to your children as well. Our offices undertakes many similar cases each year and we will be more than glad to help you.

If you do not have a Greek ancestor, but still want to live and work in Greece, we can advise you on the legal requirements in order to do so.

Am I eligible for Greek nationality by descent?

In brief, if you have at least one Greek ancestor, a citizenship right may be claimed - unfortunately requirements may change on a case-by-case basis.

The first and most important condition is to establish and prove that there is at least one ancestor who is a Greek citizen. This is not always an easy task, as it requires identifying the relevant Municipal Rolls and investigating if there is a record of the said ancestor.

Assuming that there is at least one ancestor having the Greek nationality, it is a matter of updating the civil status of the family tree (marriages, births, deaths, divorces, etc, usually need to be registered). Please note that there is no “one size fits all” process and requirements for citizenship matters, but rather the process needs to be tailor made on a case-by-case basis.

Our offices have extensive experience dealing with nationality by descent matters. We understand the complexities surrounding the process and we are able to find constructive solutions. Please contact us to discuss the particularities of your own individual case.
